The way off the merry-go-round of verbal self-abuse is to treat yourself like someone you love. How do you treat the people you love the most? Are you kind to them? Are you patient and forgiving? When you do things that make you feel proud – say to yourself: “You done good, kid.” And then reward yourself with a gift or take time to clebrate your success. But then, when you do something you’re not so proud of – be gentle and kind. Start to forgive yourself immediately by saying: “Next time I’ll do better because now I know better.”
If you treat yourself like someone you love as often as possible, one day you’ll wake up and you really will love that person looking back at you in the mirror. And yes, it really is that simple. It just takes time and persistence! Okay one more time, say it with me: “I am not my body! I am not my stuff! I am not my past! I am the eternal life of God coming into the world to live, love and laugh.”
